Things to Do in Kaimakli, Cyprus

A journey to Kaimakli, a village just beside the southern portion of the dividing line between Northern and Southern side of Cyprus, is an unforgettable experience. The village itself is made up of two parts: The first part is an old town, built around a harbour that had been a trading post for the ancient Cypriots. The second part is mostly an expanse of greenery – perfect for photography.

Trip to Kaimakli

The first thing you should do upon your arrival in Kaimakli is to take a walk to the old part of the harbour, where you can see the remains of the ancient houses. From there you have many options for sightseeing. One of the most popular paths leads you straight to the Kaimakli zoo, which has a range of exotic animals such as the stingray, shark and turtles. If you are into nature you will love this place.

After you have taken a stroll around the old part of the harbour, head straight for the mountain resort of Kaimakli. This island is called Zaerzbeiskirtou and is located on the Santorini island. The mountains here are covered with pine forests, and offer visitors the chance to trek to the very top of Mount Kaimakli. The view from above is spectacular, as is the view from the ground.

In case you want to make your trip to Kaimakli more memorable, try to spend at least one night either in town or at one of its lovely guesthouses. A stay in one of the guesthouses will allow you to experience Cypriot life while at it. While you are here, you will be able to sample a wide variety of food from the local markets. You can even go out to one of the old villages dotted around the island and have your dinner in one of its houses.

One of the main attractions of the island is its geothermal activity. The heat coming from underneath the earth keeps this area warm year round. The hot water that is trapped here has led to the formation of geysers and springs, which can be a bit stifling at times. If you are feeling adventurous, try running away from a charging geyser! Or just enjoy the cool waters of a natural spring.

A trip to Kaimakli isn’t complete without a visit to its volcano. The volcano is open to visitors who come in the summer months. The best time to visit the volcano is between May and August. During this period, the volcano is quiet, and there are not many people using it. It is during this time that you can see inside and behind the lava tube.
